Is Weed Legal in Washington DC?

The use of marijuana is legal in Washington DC for solely medical and recreational purposes.  The keyword here is use of weed. This means that the act of selling of marijuana or similar products like marijuana plants remains illegal.  Seeds are currently sold and clones can be sold as well. It’s important to know the fact that medicinal cannabis became approved at the time of the year 1998 (Initiative the 59th Amendment). The recreational use of marijuana uses was later approved in 2015 after the passing in Initiative 71.  This created a vibrant market which allowed entrepreneurs to have a chance at the budding legal cannabis industry.  The absence of the ability to self regulate has handcuffed the industries growth, however, DC councilmembers are actively trying to have congress both the House of Representatives and the Senate to remove the Harris Rider from the next budget.  This would allow the DC local government to spend money on creating a legal cannabis market.  The DC council members have made multiple attempts to shut down the vibrant growing unlicensed cannabis market, but their current attempts have all been met with extreme community outrage.  Most recently, DC has paused their inspections on the unlicensed cannabis stores in which they were creating a Joint Cannabis Task force comprising of multiple local agencies to “audit” businesses for compliance across multiple specifications.

What exactly is Initiative 71?

In the year 2015, recreational marijuana was legalized legally Washington DC- this occurred as the government passed initiative 71. Initiative 71 allows the legalization of smaller quantities of marijuana that can be used for personal purposes as well as the ability to home grow up to 6 plants. It is a vote-approved (a massive 64.87 percent approval) ballot initiative that allowed the use of marijuana for recreational purposes , as in the event that it was GIFTED or not for sale.  This is a key point of contention, that the cannabis can not be sold or traded for any type of remuneration. This enabled a number of I-71 retail stores pop in the DMV region and also provided the possibility for DC residents and visitors with no medical marijuana cards to obtain marijuana in DC at lower costs. We’ll go over the details in the following paragraphs.

First off, D.C. is not a state, yet!  The city does have 7 medical marijuana dispensaries but it does not have any that are ABRA licensed recreational dispensaries.  However, this did not stop the go- getters of DC to create the DC weed storefronts.  Many art galleries, puff-n- paint weed events, and some straight up dc weed shops have popped up in the city.  Most of the dc weed storefronts have their basic business license, and pay taxes to the DC government.  They do their best to stay in compliance with as many of the business laws as possible as well as trying to follow Initiative 71 closely.  This means that they will sell an alternative product or service, whether it is a painting, t-shirt, digital art, digital piece of content, etc. and give away the weed or cannabis for free. The consumer will typically purchase a product or service of similar value to the cannabis they want.  The DC weed storefronts and dc weed delivery services often have a very good menu which will allow anyone over the age of 21 to purchase.  You do not need a medical marijuana card to shop with the dc weed storefronts, dc weed delivery services or dc weed events.  They will not make any exceptions for anyone under the age of 21 and where you live does not matter.  The city of DC does not technically have dispensaries around for recreational use, however, you can see there are a ton of options for someone without a medical card to try to get weed in DC through the dc weed storefronts, weed delivery services, or even the dc weed events.

Where to get Cannabis within DC (Free weed gifts with no medical card required)

The DC weed market is epic.  There are constantly new vendors, storefronts, and delivery services popping up every week.  Navigating where to get weed in the city can be kind of confusing.  How will you know if the company is giving you fake products or maybe if the products are cut with something that you don’t want.  There was a crazy time with vapegate and everyone was smoking carts cut with vitamin E.  We are not trying to go through anything like that again and a few bad apples can really ruin the whole bunch.  Fortunately, we are in contact with some of the best cannabis and weed provides in the DC, Maryland, and Virginia regions.  Many of the companies listed here on dcweedevents.com have been around for years.  These guys have been through the peaks and valleys of the cannabis industry, as prices of flower fluctuates almost like stock prices.  Similarly, products and consumer trends come and go- diamonds and BHO were once the kings of extracts, but now we see the major shift to solventless hash rosin.  Finding the right weed in DC can make all the difference.  Typically once someone finds a good source they stick with that particular dc weed storefront, delivery service or vendor from an event.

What is an edible?

Edibles generally are food or drinks with cannabis either mixed or infused into the baking process.  Edibles can be sprayed with thc distillate, or created with a cannabutter, amongst other ways.  When you think of an edible you think of a cookie, brownie, or gummies but edibles can also include healthy alternatives such as dried fruit, granola, and power bars.

How Much Weed is in an Edible?

Edibles can be as crazy as the wild wild west and it is always important to know what you are getting.  Starting with how much is in each of the pieces.  Every properly made edible will have packaging that includes the milligrams of thc.  If the edible or brownie you are getting looks like it is home made, with no reference to ingredients, milligrams or anything else- stay away.  This can be a huge red flag as you do not know how the person made it, their process or how strong it really is.  A common issue in edibles is consistency- making sure that every piece tastes the same and has the same amount of cannabis inside.  It is very difficult to understand and even guess how much cannabis or weed is in that particular edible without it being lab tested.  Once you can understand the milligrams of thc in each piece then you can start slowly and work your way up.  The typical stoner story of eating too many edibles because you did not feel anything for a little bit happens all too often.  On the drastic side, people end up in the hospital because they ate too much thc and do not know how to handle it.
